Main Question 1 Question 2 Question 3 Question 4 Question 5 presented as part of Consuming Places

Whose community is it?

The community was set up to be away from the main city at Burning Man. It was geared to be an abstract art piece in form, and a safe haven from sun, wind, and rain in function. Our first year saw much more form, and the second year much more function. We no longer go and set up a remote geodesic installation. Instead people from all walks of life are setting up structures and building their own temporary communities with them.

Originally David von Brink and I developed these structures. Now these domes are set up by all kinds of people from all over the USA. For images, click here.

At this time our immediate friends have a new structure in use called a Tensegrity structure. This is the simplest structure yet - requiring only 3 pieces! It does a great job generating shade, but isn't really right for rain or extreme wind protection.

No one really owns any of the pieces, the structure, or the designs. It is all distributed from friend to friend. We are all well salaried employees in Northern California and the financial issues attached to this type of project are negligible.
