Barefoot College
September 13 - September 30

The Barefoot College began in 1972 with the conviction that solutions to rural problems lie within the community. The College, spread over a 60,000 sq. ft. area, is a community center providing health care, education, housing, and employment to over 100,000 people from the local region. The architecture on the campus was designed and built by community members, and incorporates innovative environmental solutions and inexpensive and re-used materials. The ethic of the Barefoot College stresses self-reliance, equality, trial-and-error solutions, respect for tradition, and experimentation. The College considers itself an effective alternative to models dependent on professionally trained architects, doctors, and educators.
